Wind Velocity and Direction Measurement
Existing method - Cup anemometers are used to measure wind velocity, and vane anemometers are used to measure the wind direction. In both these cases the cups and the vane are not stationery. In case of the velocity sensor the revolutions are measured directly and in case of the vane anemometer the vanes align themselves to the wind direction. The rotation for this alignment is sensed and converted to electrical signal through devices such as potentiometer, gray code converter etc. Both these instruments have moving parts, which need to be regularly lubricated and after some time, inaccuracy can creep in because of the wear and tear of the moving parts. Lubricants also have to be chosen depending on the application.

Proposed method - Drag across the sensor shall be measured to compute both the velocity and the direction. The drop across them, shall be measured by two differential pressure transmitters. Output signals of the differential pressure transmitters shall be fed to a computing unit, which will compute both the velocity and direction. Since the sensors are stationery and drop across them is directly converted in electrical signals there are no moving parts and apart from the maintenance needed for the electronics there is no other maintenance requirement.

The applications are for observatories, airfields, defense etc.
